Kenji Matsumoto is an artisan based in Auroville, Pondicherry specializing in handcrafted Japanese style furniture – both traditional and contemporary. The shape of furniture is not very elaborate. Care is taken about volume and dimensionality, a quality often found missing in Indian furniture that is characterized by a ‘planar flatness’. As a technique of construction, he uses Japanese traditional joinery (ki-gumi), avoiding as far as possible the use of metal inserts such as nails, screws or bolts.
